What was your favorite thing about Gateway
“Our favorite thing about the Gateway was the excellent service. We could not have been more satisfied with how we and our guests were treated by the exemplary staff. We received numerous comments about how accommodating and friendly the hotel was. The whole staff was eager to help and were phenomenal at what they did. From beginning to end, everything was smooth sailing because of the knowledge and expertise of the staff. It was also the little things the staff did that gave our entire wedding that extra special touch. I was very impressed and felt that the catering managers had our best interests at heart when giving advice about food and drink. And since we weren’t able to have a Guinness keg at the reception, they had two bottles of Guinness placed at the head table for my husband and I, and that completely made our night!”

Which of your vendors would you recommend to other couples?
“We would recommend all of our vendors to local brides. We were completely happy with all the services they provided and they were all amazing at what they did.

  • Our DJ, Musical Edge DJ Service, was fantastic. They had great music and kept everyone dancing all night and the DJ was a great guy. We also purchased an uplighting package with them and we are so happy with that choice. The lights completely transformed the room and gave it the perfect ambiance.
  • We loved our cake! Sweetest Perfections did a phenomenal job for us. She worked with me to create a beautiful cake that was so pretty, I had a hard time cutting into it! But I’m glad I did because it tasted fantastic as well and we got lots of compliments on the great flavors.
  • We were so happy with the decorating job that Celebrations Party Rentals did for us. They were so helpful in presenting ideas to us and accommodating our ideas and decorations as well. They made the room just look amazing and the ceremony in front of the waterfall just took my breath away.
  • We arranged all of our flowers ourselves, but we purchased them from Doherty’s Flowers in Des Moines. The staff at Doherty’s is very knowledgeable and really helped us pick out which flowers would be best for the wedding.
  • Our photographer was an old friend from school, Jon Lemons. He did a superb job. Jon is very talented and has an eye for capturing candid moments that are very special. We love his photojournalistic style and he is just a great guy to be working with in general.”

What made your wedding so unique?
“Our wedding could not have happened without all of our amazing vendors. We honestly do believe that we owe all the credit to them and their talents. We picked each of them because we believe they are exemplary in their field and we were right. I had some ideas of what I wanted for the wedding, but for the most part, I just gave the control to the professionals and let them do what they do best. This turned out to be exactly the right decision. When I walked into the reception room, I was completely blown away. Everything together in that room, the cake, the decorations, the flowers, the music and lights…it just all came together and made the room look like a million dollars. I just couldn’t believe my eyes at how much the room had transformed and to me, that was a very special thing. All the efforts of all the individual vendors resulted in something that was simply perfect. On top of just looking perfect, the whole night went perfectly as well. We could not have asked for friendlier, more professional people who were absolutely phenomenal at their jobs. We felt very fortunate to have had such amazing people around us to share in our day; not just friends and family who love us, but also a support staff who made our happiness their number one priority for the day.”

What was your favorite thing about Gateway?

“My favorite thing about Gateway was that it was large enough to accommodate all my guests and a large dance floor.  I also loved that, as well as being a fantastic venue, the Gateway could cater the meals; it was just one less vendor to worry about and the Gateway’s food is amazing!”

Which vendors would you recommend to other brides?

“I would recommend all of my vendors, because all of them provided me with exactly the service I asked for, nobody disappointed my high expectations!”

  • “DJ: Gee Willie Entertainment provided us with a large variety of music to keep all the guests entertained and dancing.  They also met with us prior to the big day to find out what songs we definitely wanted to hear and if there were any songs we’d rather not be played.  I appreciated the attention to detail and know that our guests had a lot more fun because of the never-ending selection of music!”

  • “Photographer (Church): Craig Carroll, Ames, IA.  We have been using Craig Carroll for all of our professional photos since I can remember, and it’s because he never disappoints!  He has so much experience and is so much fun to work with.  He actually got our little ring bearers to smile and look at the camera for the group pictures, and that was certainly not an easy task! I love all my wedding photographs and will cherish them forever!”

  • “Photographer (Reception): Matt Phalen, Mason City, IA.  The uncle of the groom, who also happens to be an award winning photographer, did a great job taking candid photos throughout the evening as we celebrated at the Gateway.  The way Matt captured all the different parts of the night (with literally hundreds of photographs), left me with exciting images that would allow me to relive the whole event again and again!”
  • “Florist: Coe’s Flowers, Ames, IA.  Dan, at Coe’s Flowers, first met with us to find out what sort of theme we were going for and then ended up creating some of the most beautiful floral arrangements we could imagine.  Everything was exactly how I had always wanted, and the bouquets and centerpieces all matched with the rest of the decorations perfectly! From now on I’ll be visiting Coe’s for all of my floral needs!”

  • “Bakery: Shelly’s Country Cakes, Baxter, IA.  Shelly baked and decorated the most beautiful cakes I have ever seen. She also had a huge variety of cake flavors to choose from, all of which were the most delicious cakes I’ve ever tasted! Guests are still commenting on how great the cake was! Shelly was very personable, fun to work with, and even worked with my florist so that I could have flowers on my cake too! ”

  • “Decorator: Celebration’s, Ames, IA.  We purchased our chair covers/bows, lighting drapery for behind the head table, ceiling “extravaganza” lights, and pink/black candy boxes from Celebration’s.  Everything was decorated very professionally and exactly how I had envisioned.  When the main lights were dimmed, all of their twinkling white lights made the night all the more romantic and beautiful.”

What would you say made your wedding so unique?

“Judge Novak, of Des Moines, started the night off by performing our ceremony in an upbeat, personalized, non-traditional way. Our personal vows, untraditional music, funky decorations and lighthearted readings made the ceremony unforgettable. After dinner, toasts and a few trips to the photobooth, the reception fun began. Cold drinks, lots of impromptu moves and hilarious photobooth pics, made our wedding night better than we could have ever dreamed. It was a beautiful night, in a great setting, with amazing family and friends. In one word, priceless.”

What was your favorite thing about Gateway?

“Everything was great from start to finish, but what stands out the most are all the wonderful people we worked with.  Everyone on the staff during the wedding weekend couldn’t have been more helpful.”

Of your vendors, which would you recommend to other couples?

“We would highly recommend all of our vendors.  Our florist was magnificent, but she is in Fairfield and did the wedding as a favor to us.  The photographer was Amy Allen of Amy Allen Photography in Des Moines, IA.  She was great to work with, flexible, creative, and we thought her charges were reasonable.

The cakes (we had seven individual ones and each one was different) were made by Cake Me, I’m Yours of Perry, IA.  Wow, they were fantastic.  Celebrations, a party and rental store in Ames was very helpful, provided some important items, and had good prices.”

What made your wedding so unique?

“What stands out in our minds are the following things:

  • The hotel was a perfect venue to hold all of our events and house our guests.  It’s atmosphere made everyone feel at ease.
  • Our vision and menu were a bit atypical. and Chef Joe and the banquet staff exceeded all of our expectations.  Everything was displayed beautifully at every event, and the food was delicious.
  • The room setup for the reception was a combination of different-sized tables (4, 6 and 8 tops, no head table) with food stations scattered around the room.  This encouraged mingling and added to the informal, fun atmosphere.  The seven cakes were all displayed on one table which made for a spectacular presentation.
  • The lobby area was perfect for our Meet and Greet on the Friday of the wedding weekend.  We used name tags that had each person’s relationship to the bride and groom written on them.  Pizza and cupcakes set the tone for a fun weekend plus both families and friends got to meet each other before the actual wedding.
  • Finally, the brunch on Sunday sent everyone off happy and with a full stomach.  The omelet station highlighted that event, but again everything was lovely-room setup, the display and variety of food, etc.
  • We have to say again that the amazing people who work at the Gateway were the standouts.”
